Perched above Hokitika on the land known as Blue Spur, The Plateau sits on terrain shaped by ancient forces, human endeavour and the resilient renewal of native bush. Once partly scared by mining, this whenua is now a landscape of healing and regeneration. The Plateau represents the newest chapter. Historic luxury estates for the future generation. At Blue Spur, that history has unfolded over thousands of years, shaped first by natural forces, then by people in search of opportunity, and now by the gradual return of the bush. The Plateau forms part of this continuing story. Its future begins with understanding what came before, respecting what remains and accepting the responsibility to care for the land as it enters a new chapter. From glacial shaping... Long before roads or settlements, the wider landscape was sculpted by glaciers moving through the Southern Alps, followed by generations of rain, wind and forest growth. These natural forces formed the elevated plateaus, ridges and naturally draining terraces that characterise Blue Spur today. Dense indigenous forest once covered much of the surrounding landscape. Much of it was later cleared elsewhere in the region, making Blue Spur’s surviving bush and forested terraces especially valuable to the ecology and character of this place. To gold-rush settlement. In the mid-19th century, the West Coast gold rush transformed Blue Spur. Prospectors arrived in search of alluvial gold within its creeks and terraces. Tracks and water races were constructed, mine workings spread across the land, and small settlements emerged to support the growing goldfield. Hotels, stores, tradespeople and a school became part of a busy community shaped by opportunity and endeavour. Over time, the easiest gold was taken and many mining operations gradually came to an end. In the decades that followed, the land was used largely for rural and lifestyle purposes, while areas once disturbed by mining began to regenerate or were replanted with native species. Remnants of the gold-rush era remain within the landscape, including old shafts, water races and mine workings, preserving traces of the people and industry that once shaped Blue Spur. To the path forward. The Plateau represents the newest chapter...a vision to restore and gently develop this whenua into a structured wilderness, where architecturally designed homes touch lightly on the contours, and nature is allowed to heal and flourish. Named in tribute to Nancy Wake, the track honours her courage, sacrifice and fierce commitment to protecting others. Her story resonates with our own belief in guardianship and our responsibility to protect and restore the natural landscape around us. Following the natural contours of the land, the track passes through native bush and regenerating landscape, surrounded by indigenous flora, forest shade and birdsong. It offers a quiet place to walk, pause and reconnect with nature, making the landscape part of everyday life. A Sanctuary for Native Birdlife The Plateau’s restoration vision extends beyond the land itself to the wildlife that calls it home. Freshwater ponds, preserved indigenous bush and ongoing native planting will create food, shelter and protected habitat for local birdlife.
